FLUFF vs. SUBSTANCE: Why hair-building fibers are different from your usual volumisers

Other keratin fibers are derived from lower-grade sources like fish bones, nails, and hooves, which result in a less-than-real appearance and uneven texture that lack in comparison to Toppik’s premium hair-building fibers made from natural keratin.

Our hair is our crowning glory—reflecting our health and mood, mirroring our emotions and self-image…but with a baby-fine or thinning mane, that’s not often true.

Here at Aremyhair, we’ve seen many clients whose lifeless hair don’t do justice to their amazing personality. Like you, they’ve spent many hours every day adding volume to their hair, combing over bald spots, and hiding their problem areas with accessories, headwear, even wigs.

We understand how time consuming and frustrating this daily ritual could be, and how it affects your confidence sometimes. So, in this blog, we’ll tell you how to bring your hair to life in a jiffy, and with minimal effort.

For a more lasting solution to hair loss: Hair Loss Treatment vs. Hair Replacement

The Usual Products: when “tried and tested” becomes “tired and wasted”

If you’re born with fine strands, or your locks simply thinned out over the years, then you’ve probably felt let down by your hair at some point.

For those with flat or thinning hair, mornings can be a flurry of activity—what with shampooing, towel drying, applying mouse, blow drying, styling, and spritzing hairspray—just to get ready for the day.

Volumising shampoos cleanse the hair of dirt and hair product residue, making it lighter and more flowy. Some products claim to increase the diameter of the strands, but note that hair usually tends to be thicker when its dry than when it’s logged down by water and impurities.

A similar effect can be expected of volumising conditioners, which typically have lightweight ingredients that make hair smooth and shiny. To achieve this near-weightlessness and sheen, a number of products turn to artificial and chemical-based ingredients.

Volumising spray foams or mousse add fullness and flexibility to hair by smoothening out the frizz without the stickiness and heaviness. While it could create the appearance of a fuller head of hair, this type of product add fluff but doesn’t actually thicken the strands.

Spray-on powders are also used as hair volumisers—just aim the nozzle on your hair and the powder will liquefy on contact, coating the strands. The catch is if you have thinning hair, then there’s not much to coat to begin with.

There are hundreds of over-the-counter products in the market that claim to thicken hair and, to be fair, many do create the illusion of fullness. However, actually adding mass to the hair strands is an altogether different issue that can be addressed by hair-building fibers.

Hair-Building Fibers: how Toppik addresses your mane concerns

Hair-building fibers are designed mainly for those with thinning hair, and they work by physically binding to hair follicles, so some hair is necessary for it to be effective. It’s as easy to use as your everyday hair product—just shake, spray, style, and be on your way.

Many of our clients attest that it also works well for concealing sparse part lines; covering up extension tracks; and touching up roots between hair coloring appointments. People with completely bald areas, however, may benefit more from other methods.

Toppik Hair-Building Fibers are made out of the same keratin protein you find in real human hair. The fibers bind with your hair naturally through static. There’s none of the heavy, sticky compounds that make your usual volumising product stay in place.

Other hair-thickening fibers, on the other hand, are extracted from animal nails or bones, or made out of cotton or plant material, which don’t produce the same static (or look as natural) as what you’re getting from Toppik.

The fibers come in nine shades that can be mixed to match virtually any hair color. The keratin-based powder physically binds to hair follicles, and the static attraction keeps it bound to the scalp. They won’t get on your pillow or clothing throughout the day, or fall onto your face during application.

What’s more, they’re resistant to precipitation, wind, and even rain. Some say they even wear them at the gym, but we wouldn’t recommend it if you’re planning on sweating profusely. Some use hair-building fibers when they want to cover up their current hair coloring with a different shade.

Toppik Hair-Building Fibers will stay in place for up to two days unless you shampoo or wash it off. The fibers stay out overnight with only a minimal need for touch-ups in the morning. If you are using it every day, a 12g bottle will last about 30 days, and a 27.5g bottle is good for about 60 days.

Knockoff Alert: why you should buy only authentic Toppik products

First off, your safety is our concern, which is why we caution against fake products that are potentially harmful. Make sure you’re buying authentic Toppik products from authorized distributors such as Aremyhair, and seek medical attention when something looks or feels off.

There have been reports on counterfeit products circulating in Malaysia and elsewhere, so don’t be fooled by “offers” that are drastically lower than the originally suggested retail price. These fakes are usually sold online and marketed as “OEM original”—but note that Toppik products are manufactured by Church & Dwight /Toppik Inc. straight out from its US factory.

If the offer is too good to be true—like when it’s sold at nearly half the original price and with free shipping at that—then it probably is. Original Toppik Hair-Building Fibers have undergone careful R&D and stringent quality controls to ensure but fake products could put you at risk of serious and even irreversible health complications.

While it’s easy to spot the difference in person, ordering online from unauthorised distributors is tricky because you’re not really seeing the product, relying only on the good name and reputation of the seller.

There are, however, telltale signs that are easy to spot such as poorly printed labels and low-quality packaging. Authentic Toppik products also come in sleek, smooth containers while knockoffs are in containers that have a sandy, uneven finish.

Note, too, that original Toppik products are not shrink-wrapped in plastic all around. More importantly, they’re made from 99.9% pure keratin protein, which has a higher density than fakes made of cheap synthetic materials.

Thinning hair and sparse spots have many causes, including a receding hairline or male pattern baldness, and thinned-out areas due to alopecia and long-term weave use for women. If you’ve been struggling with these issues for a long time, Toppik Hair-Building Fibers are a good option.

Using hair-building fibers are a more convenient and cost-efficient alternative to the daily combo of multiple hair products you use daily to make your crowning glory come alive.
