Hair replacement systems are a great option for those who want to feel more confident about their hair. But while shedding is completely normal in hairpieces as it is with natural hair, what happens when it’s shedding too much and too fast?
Getting a hair replacement system in Singapore is not cheap, especially those that look so natural, no one can tell the difference from your own hair. So, like any wise investment, you want to take care of it as much as possible.
Here at Aremyhair, we make sure that the hair pieces for men and women we provide are of the highest quality. But keeping them in good shape is mostly on you, if you want your hair replacement system for thinning hair to last a long time.
Not to worry because we have outlined below some common causes of hairpiece shedding, how to identify it, and the best ways to prevent it from happening again.

1. WATER DAMAGE
A good quality hairpiece can be worn while swimming or washed like your regular hair. But it could be a problem when a hair replacement system is soaked in water for too long. This could loosen the hair strands or degrade the adhesives that hold the hairpiece to the scalp.
Washing or submerging the hairpiece in hard water is also not advisable. That’s because hard water may contain minerals like calcium and magnesium, which produces a film that coats the hair. This makes the hair dry and brittle, so it’s more prone to breakage and shedding.
Make sure that your hairpiece is completely dry before touching it. To avoid waterlogging, wear a swimming cap, or just don’t stay out in the water for too long. If you’re living in an upland or mountainous area, consider installing a hard water softener or filter for your shower.
2. FRICTION AND FORCE
Believe it or not, YOU may be the main reason why your hairpiece is shedding! Old habits like scratching your head, brushing the hair too hard, wearing caps or hats, or tossing and turning on your pillow when sleeping can also wreak havoc on the hair replacement system.
It takes a bit of time to get used to wearing and maintaining a hair replacement system. But if you want your hairpiece to last, you should be prepared for some lifestyle adjustments. Take extra care when handling your hair, and make it a habit—one day at a time!
Check that the material of your pillow or pillowcase is low-friction, like silk or satin. Don’t tie up or braid your hair too tightly. And with a hairpiece that looks so natural, you wouldn’t want to hide it under caps, hats, or scarves! Besides, this could cause hair to tangle or be pulled off.

3. OIL DAMAGE
Our scalp naturally secretes oil, which keeps the hair healthy and prevents it from drying out. But too much oil is not so good for hairpieces, and this includes the oily coating from silicone-based hair products. It loosens the knots at the hairpiece’s base, which causes hair fall.
If you think your scalp tends to be overly oily, consider using a scalp protector. It’s a product that forms a protective barrier over the adhesives and tapes that hold the hairpiece. Scalp protectors are also a good supplement for when you are deep cleaning your hair system.
Although they can make hair shiny and smooth, silicone-based shampoos and conditioners are not advisable for hair replacement systems. Switch to non-silicone products or use spray-on or leave-in products, which stay mostly on the surface of the hair and not the roots.
4. HEAT AND UV LIGHT
Heat and UV light—whether it’s from the sun or artificial sources—can likewise be a factor in hairpiece shedding. In fact, even our natural hair is affected. As such, where you live, where you work, and whether you’re mostly outdoors are some of the factors to be considered.
What heat does is break down the hydrogen bond that is responsible for making the hair strong and healthy. Meanwhile, UV rays can cause brittle hair, split ends, dry hair, discoloration, thinning, and frizziness. And all that applies to both the natural hair and the hairpiece, too.
Practice air drying your hair instead of using a blow dryer, or buy one with a cold setting. You can also try heat-protection creams or sprays, especially when you spend a lot of time under the sun or harsh fluorescent lights (or pick UV-reducing or UV-free light alternatives).

5. CHEMICALS
The hair’s protein structure can be damaged with too much contact with chemicals. These also weaken the bonds that hold the hairpiece to the scalp. Aside from the silicone-based products mentioned earlier, there are lots of ways that the hair can be exposed to chemicals.
We don’t recommend that you go to a regular salon to get a perm, bleach, hair colouring, rebonding, or any other service that entails the use of professional-grade products that may contain harsh chemicals. Just pop into our studio and we’ll style your hair, safely!
At Aremyhair, we don’t just sell hairpieces, we offer a full-service hair replacement system with all the bells and whistles. We go the extra mile by providing free touch-ups, free adjustments, warranties, and even repairs, in special cases.
WHY AREMYHAIR FOR HAIR REPLACEMENT SYSTEMS
Not many studios will tell you that all hair replacement systems are handmade and susceptible to production issues such as hair fall or hair breakage. Even fewer studios are willing to support their clients through these issues—this is where our free repairs set us apart. You may also check out our value-added programs like Warranty and Loyalty Programme.
