Newsletter May. 2008 #12

Dear Friends of iAremyhair
,

In our last newsletter, we learnt about hair replacement during the Middle Ages. It is fascinating that hairpieces have played such a significant role in self-expression. They were used to voice social attitudes and societal ranking. Today we will explore hair replacement in colonial America and how hairpieces shaped an important part of this famous superpower’s history!

 CHAPTER 3

Click here to read Chapters 1 & 2, if you have missed them.

Colonists who settled in the New World, on the shores of America, brought with them customs from England. After the initial struggle for survival, colonists turned to other peripheral issues like fashion. During this period, imported English and European fashion trends became firmly entrenched amoungst the colonies.

Just as in the Middle Ages, hairpieces became a symbol of standing in society. Famous leaders like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson wore hairpieces at one point in time during their office terms. Interestingly, the number of hairpieces a person owned during Colonial America was usually a reflection of his wealth. Men who could afford hairpieces certainly wore them. Those who couldn’t afford full hairpieces used braided pigtails, or ‘queues’, instead. Wealthy slave owners often flaunted their wealth by providing hairpieces for their higher-ranked servants.

Furthermore, the makers of these hairpieces held an essential standing in societies back in Colonial America. They provided a number of services, including shaving, bathing and dressing. They also made custom-made wigs by shaving their customers’ heads and taking precise measurements. The method of designing these hairpieces is actually very similar to the method used presently! However, the process was certainly less efficient back then. It actually took six makers, working from dawn to dark, a total of six full days to complete one hairpiece! Tools were certainly more primitive back then!

During the late 1700s, hairpieces became less fashionable amoungst the younger generation and instead were more popular amoungst the older and more conservative men. In the 18th and 19th centuries, hairpieces were only used to cover balding heads and were not deemed fashion accessories. During this period, fashion trends slanted toward shorter hairstyles and more emphasis was placed on facial hair instead. Hairpieces continued to be in decline.

With this, the third chapter of our exploration comes to an end! Please do look forward to our last and most exciting chapter where we will learn more about hairpieces in the 20th century and how hair were used to oust people’s belief systems!

Look Forward for the Next and Last Chapter... Coming Soon.
